Honor Announces Integration of DeepSeek-R1 AI Model With Yoyo Assistant in China

Honor, the Chinese smartphone brand, announced the integration of its Yoyo virtual assistant with the DeepSeek-R1 artificial intelligence (AI) model on Saturday. The company claimed to have become the first Android manufacturer to offer the AI model in its devices. With this, the company's native assistant will be able to tap into the capabilities of the reasoning model to complete complex tasks. Notably, in the previous weeks, Perplexity and Microsoft's Azure AI Foundry have also added the DeepSeek-R1 model as an on-platform offering. Notably, the Yoyo assistant is currently only available in China.

DeepSeek-R1 Integrated With Honor's Yoyo Assistant

In a post on Weibo, the official handle of Honor announced the integration and the new capabilities that the Yoyo assistant will now support. The large language model (LLM) is available for those using MagicOS 8.0 and newer with the Yoyo assistant version 80.0.1.503 and newer.

To use DeepSeek-R1, Honor users in China will have to go to the Yoyo smart store and find the model to initiate a conversation with it. The DeepSeek welcome screen contains the description, “I am an intelligent agent based on the open-source version of the DeepSeek-R1, dedicated to bringing users an immersive deep thinking experience, helping users to dig deeper and gain insight into the essence in the process of exploring knowledge, solving problems, and stimulating creativity,” as per a Huawei Central report.

Notably, the integration has currently been rolled out in beta, and as such, it might come with glitches and bugs that can dampen the user experience. As per Honor, DeepSeek-R1 will improve the virtual assistant's natural language processing, logical reasoning, and contextual understanding of complex commands. The company also announced that more than 13 crore monthly active users use the Yoyo virtual assistant.

The DeepSeek-R1 is a reasoning-focused model with chain-of-thought (CoT) transparency. This means users can see the thought process of the AI while it breaks down complex problems, double guesses its output and verifies it using alternative methods. The company did not reveal whether the AI model will also be able to communicate and draw information from other apps or not.

While the current rollout only includes China, it is unclear whether Honor will also introduce the open-source AI model to global markets. Notably, the Chinese AI model has faced security concerns after a cybersecurity firm found evidence in the DeepSeek chatbot's source code that links it to a Chinese telecom firm that is banned in the US. Australian government and regulators in Italy have already banned the AI platform.

Extreme Arctic Warming Sees North Pole Temperatures Rise Above Freezing

A dramatic rise in temperature was recorded at the North Pole, with levels surpassing the freezing point due to an extreme winter warming event. Reports indicate that temperatures climbed 20 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average, raising concerns among climate scientists about its impact on Arctic ice loss and long-term warming trends. The event, which occurred over the weekend, is said to be among the most extreme instances of winter warming recorded in the region.

Warming Near The North Pole

As reported by the Guardian, temperatures at the North Pole exceeded 0 degrees Celsius on Sunday. Data from the European Union's Copernicus Climate Change Service confirmed the significant warming trend, while an Arctic snow buoy logged a temperature reading of 0.5 degrees Celsius. Mika Rantanen, a researcher at the Finnish Meteorological Institute, told the Guardian that although estimating exact temperature variations in remote Arctic locations remains difficult, models suggest a deviation of more than 20 degrees Celsius.

Weather system over Iceland linked to Arctic temperature rise

Julien Nicolas, a senior scientist at the Copernicus Climate Change Service, told the Guardian that a deep low-pressure system near Iceland was responsible for directing warm air toward the Arctic. The phenomenon was further amplified by warm sea temperatures in the northeastern Atlantic. Nicolas stated that while such weather events are rare, further analysis is required to determine their frequency.

Historical precedents and climate change concerns

Previous instances of extreme Arctic warming have been recorded. In December 2016, temperatures at the North Pole reached approximately 32 degrees Fahrenheit during a winter heatwave.

Studies indicate that the Arctic is warming at a rate nearly four times faster than the rest of the world, a phenomenon known as Arctic amplification. The loss of reflective sea ice accelerates warming by increasing the absorption of solar energy. Indigenous communities and Arctic wildlife, including polar bears and whales, are particularly vulnerable to these changes, which threaten their habitats and long-term survival.

Atmos Space Cargo’s Phoenix Capsule Set for First Orbital Test on SpaceX Mission

A cargo-return technology developed by Germany-based Atmos Space Cargo is set to undergo its first in-space test with an upcoming SpaceX mission. The company's Phoenix capsule will be launched aboard the Bandwagon 3 rideshare mission, scheduled for no earlier than April. The capsule has been designed to facilitate the safe return of high-value materials from orbit, particularly benefiting the biomedical sector. The test mission aims to gather crucial data on the capsule's subsystems, onboard payloads, and reentry performance.

Mission Objectives and Scientific Payloads

According to reports, the Phoenix capsule will carry four payloads, including a radiation detector from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) and a bioreactor from UK-based Frontier Space. The mission's primary goals include testing Phoenix's performance in orbit, evaluating data from customer experiments, and deploying its proprietary inflatable atmospheric decelerator (IAD) for reentry stabilisation. This technology, acting as both a heat shield and parachute, is intended to enable a controlled descent back to Earth.

Challenges in Returning Space Cargo

Industry experts highlight that while the cost and complexity of launching experiments into space have been reduced, bringing them back to Earth remains a challenge due to high costs, long turnaround times, and technical difficulties. Atmos Space Cargo has positioned Phoenix as a cost-effective and reliable solution for returning biomedical samples, microgravity-manufactured materials, and other sensitive payloads.

Future Prospects and Industry Impact

Despite expectations that Phoenix will not survive its debut mission, the collected data will contribute to future improvements. Larger iterations of the capsule are planned to carry heavier payloads, including potential returns of rocket stages. Advisory board member and former NASA Deputy Administrator Lori Garver has stated that advancements in reusable and affordable cargo return technology are critical for the future of orbital space operations. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to enhance accessibility to in-space manufacturing and research.

NASA’s PUNCH Mission Set to Track the Sun’s Corona and Solar Wind in 3D

A new space mission designed to study the Sun's outer atmosphere and track space weather in three dimensions is set to launch this month. NASA's Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission, consisting of four small satellites, is scheduled to be sent into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket on February 27. This mission aims to investigate the transformation of the Sun's corona into the solar wind, the stream of charged particles that extends throughout the solar system. The data collected could improve understanding of solar wind dynamics and space weather forecasting, which has implications for Earth's power grids and satellites.

Mission Objectives and Scientific Goals

According to reports, PUNCH is the first initiative specifically designed to bridge the gap between solar physics and solar wind physics. The mission will study how the Sun's outer atmosphere transitions into the heliosphere—a vast region shaped by the solar wind that encases the solar system. Joe Westlake, Director of NASA's Heliophysics Division, stated that this mission will provide a continuous observation of the Sun's corona and its influence on space weather.

How PUNCH Works

PUNCH will consist of four satellites working together to create 3D observations of the heliosphere. Craig DeForest, the mission's principal investigator at the Southwest Research Institute, explained that three of these satellites will be equipped with wide-field imagers to capture detailed views of solar wind structures. A fourth satellite, developed by the Naval Research Laboratory, will use a narrow-field imager to create an artificial total solar eclipse, allowing continuous monitoring of the Sun's corona in high definition.

Advancements in Space Weather Forecasting

This mission is expected to enhance space weather forecasting by enabling real-time tracking of solar storms. According to Nicholeen Viall, a mission scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center, PUNCH's ability to capture polarized light will allow scientists to determine the 3D location of solar wind structures. This could improve predictions of geomagnetic storms, which have the potential to impact satellites and power infrastructure on Earth.

Collaboration with Other Solar Missions

NASA has confirmed that PUNCH will complement the Parker Solar Probe, which is currently making direct observations of the Sun's corona. Together, these missions will provide a comprehensive dataset spanning vast scales, offering unprecedented insights into how solar wind originates and interacts with the heliosphere. DeForest added that an additional outcome of PUNCH will be the creation of the most extensive polarimetric star map, covering over three-quarters of the visible sky.

Bitcoin Price Drops to $97,800 Alongside Most Altcoins Amid Ongoing Market Slump

Amid the ongoing US-China trade war, the crypto market rally has seen a significant slowdown. On Friday, Bitcoin's price dropped by less than one percent on international exchanges, and the digital asset was trading at $97,486 (roughly Rs. 85.2 lakh) on global platforms, as per CoinMarketCap data. On Indian exchanges, the price of BTC dropped by more than one percent, and it was trading at $101,252 (roughly Rs. 88.5 lakh). The price of Bitcoin has not shown a major change over the past 48 hours — it was trading at $98,110 (around Rs. 85.4 lakh) on Wednesday.

BTC has been consolidating as it seeks its next move, which will determine whether it enters a sustained bull or bear market in the coming days. This comes as Donald Trump Jr., the son of US President Donald Trump, stated at a summit yesterday that crypto is the future of American dominance,” the CoinSwitch markets desk told Gadgets 360.

The price of Ether dropped by 3.55 percent on international exchanges, bringing its value to $2,720 (roughly Rs. 2.37 lakh). On Indian exchanges, the price of the asset dropped by around four percent to trade at $2,869 (roughly Rs. 2.51 lakh).

“The market pressure seems much more widespread, with Ethereum now approaching recovery. Liquidity conditions are improving. If buying pressure increases, key market indicators suggest the potential for an upward move. The availability of capital could help the Ethereum price bounce in the near term,” Avinash Shekhar, Co-Founder and CEO of Pi42 told Gadgets 360.

The crypto price chart by Gadgets 360 showed most altcoins had dropped in value on Friday, including Ripple, Solana, and Cardano alongside Avalanche, Chainlink, Shiba Inu, Dogecoin, Stellar, and Polkadot.

Other altcoins that were down on Friday included Shiba Inu, Uniswap, Litecoin, Leo, and Stellar.

“Most of the altcoins are constantly forming lower highs and lows, hinting towards the rising dominance of the bears. Although the markets display a consistent trend, the probability of a breakdown continues to hover over the crypto markets. On the other hand, Bitcoin dominance surged above 60 percent, indicating a notable delay in the ‘alt season',” the CoinDCX markets team said in conversation with Gadgets 360.

Market analysts have predicted that the ongoing volatility will prevail for some more days and have strongly advised traders to be cautious with each investment decision.

The overall capitalisation of the crypto market slipped by 0.90 percent in the last 24 hours, bringing the valuation to $3.18 trillion (roughly Rs. 2,78,14,854 crore), according to CoinMarketCap.

Not all cryptocrrencies were down on Friday. Some digital assets like Tether, USD Coin, Iota, Qtum, Underdog, and Braintrust saw their prices rise.

It is speculated to be a quick shutter that activates the camera and enables users to quickly capture photos with a single button press, similar to the Camera Control button on the iPhone 16 models.

Alternatively, it could be an alert slider, similar to the one found on devices made by Carl Pei's former company, OnePlus. Fans also speculate it may have the capability of invoking the voice assistant, in line with Nothing's plans of betting big on AI. Another speculation is that it could be the company's own take on Apple's Action button, having multi-purpose programmable functionality.

However, it is important to note that the aforementioned information is based purely on speculation and its purpose is likely to be revealed in the days leading up to Phone 3a series' launch, which is scheduled for March 4.

A 7,000-year-old femur bone belonging to an antelope, discovered in a South African cave, has revealed the earliest confirmed use of a multi-component arrow poison. Three modified bone arrowheads were found embedded within the marrow cavity, and a recent scientific analysis has identified a mixture of plant-based toxins. This discovery provides new insight into the pharmacological knowledge and hunting practices of early humans, highlighting the complexity of their technological advancements and understanding of toxic substances.

Scientific Analysis of the Poisonous Compound

According to the reports published in The Conversation, Justin Bradfield, Associate professor at University of Johannesburg along with other researchers examined the femur using micro-CT imaging. The sediment-like substance inside the marrow cavity was found to be foreign matter rather than natural deposits. Chemical analysis confirmed the presence of digitoxin and strophanthidin, toxic cardiac glycosides that disrupt heart function. Ricinoleic acid, a derivative of ricin, was also detected, suggesting the use of multiple plant sources to create a potent poison.

Implications for Ancient Trade and Knowledge Systems

As per the research, the plants containing these toxic compounds are not naturally found near Kruger Cave, where the femur was originally discovered. No remains of these plants have been identified in previous archaeobotanical studies of the region. This suggests that early humans either travelled long distances to acquire these materials or engaged in an organised trade network for toxic plant ingredients. Such findings highlight the extensive knowledge early societies had regarding medicinal and toxic plants and their application in hunting strategies.

Historical Context of Poison Use in Hunting

Previous evidence of poison use dates back approximately 60,000 years, coinciding with the development of projectile hunting technology in Africa. While chemical verification of such early poison use remains unconfirmed, the newly analysed femur provides the first concrete proof of a deliberately mixed poison for arrows. The application of plant-based toxins to hunting weapons marks a significant evolutionary step in the efficiency of ancient hunting techniques, demonstrating a sophisticated level of planning and knowledge transfer among early human groups.

February 2025 Planet Parade: How to See Five Planets Align in the Sky

A spectacular celestial event is set to unfold in February 2025, as five of the brightest planets—Venus, Jupiter, Mars, Mercury and Saturn—become visible together in the evening sky. The alignment will peak on February 24, when Mercury and Saturn will appear closest to each other, creating a striking visual near the horizon. Skywatchers with a clear view of the western sky at dusk will have the opportunity to witness this planetary display, with Uranus and Neptune also observable through telescopes or binoculars. Similar alignments have been recorded in the past, but this particular configuration offers an accessible viewing window for astronomy enthusiasts and casual observers alike. The next comparable event will not occur until October 2028, making this a rare chance to observe multiple planets in a single glance.

Venus and Saturn: A Contrasting Pair

According to reports, Venus will dominate the evening sky as the brightest of the five planets, shining prominently in the west-southwest. Despite its intense luminosity, Saturn, appearing below Venus, will be significantly dimmer due to its current ring orientation, which reflects less sunlight. Telescopic observation will reveal the rings as a thin line bisecting Saturn's disk. As the month progresses, Saturn will sink lower into the horizon, becoming increasingly challenging to spot by the end of February.

Jupiter and Mars Brighten the Night

Jupiter will be another standout feature, appearing high in the southern sky with its signature silvery-white glow. Its four largest moons—Europa, Ganymede, Callisto and Io—will be visible through binoculars, particularly on February 25-26, when three of them will form a distinct triangular formation. Meanwhile, Mars, positioned in the eastern sky, will share its space with Gemini's twin stars, Pollux and Castor. This trio will shift gradually across the sky, offering a dynamic spectacle throughout the month.

Mercury and Saturn's Close Encounter

Mercury will emerge in the final week of February, reaching peak brightness on February 24, when it will align closely with Saturn. The two planets will be separated by only 1.5 degrees, with Mercury shining nearly eight times brighter. Observers will need a clear west-southwest horizon and binoculars to spot both planets, particularly as Saturn fades into the twilight.

Uranus and Neptune: The Fainter Participants

For those equipped with telescopes or high-powered binoculars, Uranus and Neptune will also be within reach. Uranus, with its faint greenish hue, might be visible under dark-sky conditions, while Neptune will require optical aid due to its lower brightness. The latter will spend the month in Pisces, gradually vanishing into the brightening evening sky before its solar conjunction in March.

Skywatchers hoping to view this rare planetary alignment should mark their calendars for February 24, when the best chance to witness all five bright planets together will occur.

Ear Muscles Flex to Help Focus on Sounds, Study Reveals Evolutionary Link

A study has found that small muscles in the human ear flex when an individual tries to focus on a particular sound in a noisy environment. These muscles, which were once crucial for movement in ancestral species, no longer play a significant role in modern human hearing. However, their activation suggests an evolutionary remnant of a once-functional auditory system. Researchers believe that understanding these subtle muscular responses could contribute to advancements in hearing aid technology.

Research Findings on Ear Muscles

According to the study published in Frontiers in Neuroscience, experiments were conducted by Saarland University in Germany to examine the response of auricular muscles during listening tasks. Participants with normal hearing were exposed to overlapping audio sources while their ear muscles were monitored using electrodes. The results indicated that the superior auricular muscles, located above the ears, became more active as the difficulty of distinguishing sounds increased.

In contrast, the posterior auricular muscles, which are situated behind the ears, showed heightened activity when sounds originated from behind the participants. It has been suggested that these reflexive movements may have once helped early humans detect sounds outside their direct line of sight.

Potential Applications in Hearing Aids

Steven Hackley, a researcher at the University of Missouri, stated to Live Science that these findings could influence future hearing aid development. He explained that if hearing aids could detect muscle activation, they might be able to automatically amplify sounds in the direction a person is trying to focus on.

While some researchers believe the study provides insights into how humans attempt to enhance their hearing, others have noted that the increased muscle activity may not necessarily correlate with listening effort. Matthew Winn, a researcher at the University of Minnesota, stated to Live Science that the muscle response could instead reflect a heightened state of alertness rather than a conscious attempt to hear better.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Tipped to Get Under-Display Camera (UDC) Similar to Galaxy Z Fold 6

Samsung Galaxy S25 series will go on sale later this week, but initial leaks about next year's Galaxy S26 lineup have already started circulating online. Samsung hasn't introduced any significant upgrades to the front camera setup on its flagship phones in recent years, but the latest leak suggests that the Galaxy S26 Ultra could change this trend. The early prototypes of the Galaxy S26 Ultra are said to be missing the selfie camera cutout in their displays, which could mean that next year's Ultra model could borrow a feature from the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra May Offer Full-Screen Experience

Tipster Kro on X suggested that Samsung is testing a UDC (Under Display Camera) for its Galaxy S26 Ultra. The display of the prototype is said to lack a notch or a hole-punch cutout for the selfie camera.

Samsung already employed an under-display camera unit on the inner screen of Galaxy Z Fold smartphones. The feature was introduced with the Galaxy Z Fold 3. By keeping it hidden under the display, the UDC allows users to enjoy videos or games uninterrupted by any cutout. It is primarily used for video calls and facial recognition for unlocking the device.

Apart from the UDC, Samsung is said to be evaluating a 200-megapixel periscope telephoto camera with a 1/1.5-inch sensor size for the Galaxy S26 Ultra model. The Galaxy S26 series is expected to feature 65W wired fast charging. This would be a considerable improvement over the 45W charging offered by the Galaxy S25 lineup.

Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra is also said to be the brand's first bar-type smartphone to feature the latest Colour Filter on Encapsulation (CoE) technology, which is claimed to reduce power consumption and increase light transmittance. It could run on Qualcomm's flagship Snapdragon hardware. The non-ultra models in the Galaxy S26 series, on the other hand, are rumoured to ship with the company's in-house Exynos chips.

iPhone 15 Becomes the Best-Selling Smartphone of 2024, Samsung Also on the List With 3 Models: Canalys

Apple dominated the list of the original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) with the most smartphones shipped in 2024, according to claims by a market research firm. The Cupertino-based technology giant had as many as seven iPhone models in the top 10 best-selling smartphones of 2024 list, with its new flagship iPhone 16 Pro Max also becoming a runaway success, even though it only debuted in September 2024. Meanwhile, Samsung just about managed to earn its place in the top five rankings courtesy of the Galaxy A15.

Notably, Apple had also secured the top spot in Q4 2024 with a 23 percent market share, driven by its latest iPhone 16 series.

Best-Selling Smartphones of 2024

A report by market analysis firm Canalys reveals that the global smartphone market grew by 7 percent year-on-year (YoY) in 2024, reaching 1.22 billion units. This is said to be the first recovery after two consecutive years of decline in smartphone shipments. Apple retained its crown as the company with the most smartphone shipments in the year from 2023, even though iPhone shipments declined by 1 percent to 225.9 million units.

Samsung's smartphone shipments also saw a 1 percent decline to 222.9 million units in 2024 and it finished just beneath Apple. Xiaomi continued its strong growth, finishing third on the list, registering a 15 percent growth to 168.6 million units. Transsion Holdings, which owns brands like Tecno, Infinix, and Itel, ranked fourth, while Oppo (including OnePlus) rounded off the top five.

While iPhone 15 topped the charts of the best-selling smartphones of 2024, Apple's iPhone 16 Pro Max and iPhone 15 Pro Max ranked second and third, respectively. Meanwhile, the Galaxy A15 was the only other phone in the top five rankings, earning the fourth place, and the iPhone 16 Pro completed the top five list. Interestingly, no other brand apart from Apple and Samsung had a device in the top 10 best-selling list. It was dominated by Apple with seven iPhone models, followed by Samsung's three offerings, although only one was a flagship device; Galaxy S24 Ultra. The entire list of the top 10 best-selling smartphones is as follows:

  1. iPhone 15
  2. iPhone 16 Pro Max
  3. iPhone 15 Pro Max
  4. Samsung Galaxy A15
  5. iPhone 16 Pro
  6. iPhone 15 Pro
  7. iPhone 16
  8. Samsung Galaxy A15 5G
  9. Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra
  10. iPhone 13

As per the market research firm, 2025 brings complexities both globally and regionally. Growth is said to have slowed down as several markets reach a point of saturation. Thus, vendors may have to find the correct balance between short-term performance, inventory management and long-term investments to succeed.

New Study Uses Math to Decode Creativity and Idea Formation

A new research study has examined the mathematical principles governing creativity and innovation, shedding light on how novel ideas emerge. By analysing data across different domains, researchers have identified patterns that could refine the understanding of how individuals and societies generate new concepts. The study investigates two types of novelty—discovering an entirely new element and forming unique combinations of existing elements. The findings could be crucial in fields such as science, literature, and technology, where innovation plays a vital role in advancement.

Mathematical Framework for Creativity

According to the study published in Nature Communications, researchers introduced a framework to model how new ideas emerge. Led by Professor Vito Latora from Queen Mary University of London, the team focused on higher-order novelties—combinations of familiar elements that create something new. Speaking to Phys.org, Prof. Latora stated that the study is part of a broader effort to understand the mechanisms underlying creativity, aiming to identify factors that contribute to the success of ideas, products, and technologies.

A mathematical model called Edge-Reinforced Random Walk with Triggering (ERRWT) was developed to simulate how people discover and combine elements. Unlike traditional random walks, which assume equal probability for each step, ERRWT strengthens frequently used connections and triggers new links when novel combinations occur. This process mirrors real-world discovery, where repeated exposure to certain elements increases the likelihood of making new associations.

Analysing Patterns Across Domains

The research team applied the ERRWT model to three distinct datasets—music listening habits from Last.fm, literary texts from Project Gutenberg, and scientific publications from Semantic Scholar. The findings revealed that while individuals might have similar rates of discovering new elements, the sequences in which they arrange them differ significantly.

For music listeners, certain users developed unique listening patterns despite discovering the same number of new songs. In literature, writers frequently created new word pairings rather than introducing entirely new words. Scientific papers, particularly titles, demonstrated a higher tendency for novel word combinations compared to narrative texts.

Predicting Innovation with Heaps' Law

The study also highlighted that the process of novelty creation follows Heaps' law, a power-law relationship describing how new elements and combinations emerge over time. By applying this principle, researchers could predict different rates of innovation across disciplines. The results indicated that while some fields prioritise the discovery of individual elements, others focus on recombining existing ones in unique ways.

Implications for Future Research

The findings suggest that understanding how creative processes unfold could help refine strategies for fostering innovation. Prof. Latora noted that studying novelty creation is essential for identifying factors that contribute to the rise and decline of trends, products, and ideas. Future research aims to expand the model by incorporating a social component, which could provide insights into how external influences shape creative developments.

Researchers Spot Unusual, Overmassive Globular Clusters in Ultra-Diffuse Galaxy FCC 224

A team of researchers has observed an ultra-diffuse galaxy, FCC 224, uncovering an unusual system of globular clusters. The galaxy, located in the Fornax cluster approximately 65 million light-years away, has been found to host luminous and overmassive globular clusters. The study, conducted using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) and supported by spectroscopic data from the Keck Cosmic Web Imager (KCWI), has provided insights into the formation and evolution of this galaxy and its star clusters. The findings indicate a single-burst star formation history, with the globular clusters displaying unique characteristics in terms of mass, size, and brightness distribution.

Overmassive Globular Cluster System Identified

According to the study published on the arXiv pre-print server, FCC 224 is a quiescent ultra-diffuse galaxy estimated to be around 10 billion years old. It has a major axis effective radius of roughly 6,160 light-years and a stellar mass of approximately 200 million solar masses. Observations have revealed that the galaxy hosts 12 exceptionally bright globular clusters, with some showing absolute magnitudes around -9.0 mag. The total mass of these clusters is estimated to be 3.8 million solar masses, accounting for nearly 2 percent of the galaxy's stellar mass, which is significantly higher than expected for a galaxy of this size.

Distinctive Features of the Globular Clusters

As reported by phys.org, the study found that the globular clusters in FCC 224 closely resemble the galaxy's diffuse starlight, exhibiting a narrow color range and lacking a significant color gradient. This suggests that the galaxy underwent a single, intense star formation period. Researchers also noted that these clusters have relatively small sizes, with half-light radii ranging between 7.8 and 15.6 light-years. The globular cluster population appears to be radially mass-segregated, with brighter clusters concentrated toward the galaxy's center.

Implications and Future Research

Findings from the study indicate that FCC 224 possesses an unusual globular cluster system with characteristics that challenge conventional expectations. The research team has suggested that further theoretical studies will be needed to explain the origins of these distinctive properties and the role they play in the galaxy's evolution.

First Mouse with Two Fathers Thrives into Adulthood, Marking New Scientific Milestone

A major development in stem cell science has been achieved with the creation of a bi-paternal mouse, marking a significant step in reproductive biology. Scientists have successfully engineered a mouse with two male biological parents, which managed to survive into adulthood. This research, conducted by a team of stem cell experts, has addressed longstanding barriers in unisexual mammalian reproduction by modifying specific imprinting genes. The findings, which could have implications for regenerative medicine, highlight the challenges and potential future applications of the technology.

Genetic Modifications Enable Bi-Paternal Development

According to the study published in Cell Stem Cell, led by Wei Li of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), the team focused on overcoming imprinting-related challenges that previously prevented embryos with same-sex genetic origins from developing fully. Modifications were made to 20 imprinting genes using techniques such as frameshift mutations, gene deletions, and regulatory region edits. These changes allowed some bi-paternal embryos to survive to birth and, in rare cases, reach adulthood.

Co-corresponding author Qi Zhou of CAS explained to phys.org, that imprinting genes have been identified as a key obstacle in unisexual reproduction. Despite previous attempts using ovarian organoids derived from male stem cells, imprinting abnormalities caused severe developmental defects. By directly editing these genes, the research team improved embryonic viability and the stability of pluripotent stem cells.

Survival and Reproductive Challenges Remain

As per reports, only 11.8 percent of the engineered embryos developed to birth, and those that survived exhibited developmental abnormalities, reduced lifespan, and sterility. Guan-Zheng Luo of Sun Yat-sen University, a co-corresponding author, stated that imprinting abnormalities have been confirmed as the primary factor preventing unisexual reproduction in mammals.

Despite the limitations, this approach has demonstrated the potential for refining stem cell-based therapies and improving cloning efficiency. Researchers plan to expand the study to larger mammals, though substantial challenges remain due to differences in imprinting gene patterns across species.

Astronomers Discover 19 New Quasars Using DESI Legacy Surveys Data

A significant discovery has been made in the field of astronomy, with 19 new quasars, including strongly-lensed, dual, and projected types, identified through analysis of data from the DESI Legacy Surveys photometry catalog. This breakthrough highlights the potential of quasar observations in furthering our understanding of the universe. These objects, known for their extreme luminosity and powered by supermassive black holes, have long been pivotal for research into astrophysics and cosmology. Observations were conducted at the Palomar Observatory in California.

Findings of the DESI Legacy Surveys

According to the study led by Zizhao He of the Purple Mountain Observatory, the investigation confirmed two strongly-lensed quasars, six dual quasars, and 11 projected quasars. Observations were carried out on October 15–16, 2023, using the P200/DBSP instrument. The study noted that the lensed quasars, designated J0746+1344 and J2121-0826, were observed at redshifts of 3.1 and 2.39, respectively. J0746+1344 displayed a unique configuration, with the lensing galaxy positioned beside the brightest image—an anomaly compared to typical observations.

Dual and Projected Quasars

As reported by phys.org, the six dual quasars identified showed redshifts ranging from 0.59 to 3.28, with separations between their components varying from 50,300 to 73,500 light years. Among these, J1929+6009 stood out due to a remarkably small redshift difference of less than 0.0001 and a projected separation of 62,800 light years.

The 11 projected quasars demonstrated separations spanning 35,700 to 123,400 light years. One such system, J0422+0047, was previously thought to be a gravitationally-lensed quasar system, though further analysis indicated a chance alignment of projected quasars with an intervening galaxy, complicating its classification.

Implications of the Discovery

This research underscores the importance of advanced observational techniques in uncovering unique cosmic phenomena. By analysing the behaviour, redshifts, and configurations of these quasars, astronomers aim to expand their knowledge of the universe's structure and the dynamics of supermassive black holes.

Apple Readying New Version of visionOS for Future AR Smart Glasses: Gurman

Apple started selling its first mixed reality headset Vision Pro in select global markets last year. The Cupertino giant is now believed to be on track to release smart glasses to expand its product portfolio in the augmented and mixed-reality space. A recent report by Bloomberg states Apple's long-rumoured smart glasses are in the works. The company is said to be developing a new version of visionOS that is tailor-made for these glasses. Apple is anticipated to release other devices in the style of Vision Pro that it hopes will be cheaper and more enticing to consumers.

Apple Smart Glasses Are At Least Three Years Away

In the latest edition of his Power On newsletter, Mark Gurman claims that work on the AR glasses is ongoing at a secretive facility in Santa Clara, California. Apple is said to be working on a version of visionOS — the Vision Pro's software — that will run on its smart glasses. The Vision Pro also runs on the same OS. Gurman notes that Apple is conducting user studies at its offices to gauge the appeal of features and interfaces alongside developing AR technology for future devices.

The Apple AR glasses will reportedly take three years or more to be ready. In the meantime, The iPhone maker is reportedly exploring other types of wearable products, including a rival to Meta's Ray-Ban spectacles and even camera-equipped AirPods

According to Gurman, Apple had originally hoped to launch its AR spectacles as a follow-up to the Vision Pro, but the plan was dropped due to technical challenges.

Apple is not the only company working on smart glasses. Apple's major rival Samsung also joined the race and announced its XR headset earlier this month. Meanwhile, Meta is eying to unveil its AR product named Orion by 2027. Google is developing an operating system specifically for headsets and glasses called Android XR.

Apple is expected to design AR glasses with broader mass-market appeal than the Apple Vision Pro. It unveiled the Vision Pro in 2023 at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC). The shipments began last year in select markets like the US, China, and Japan with a starting price tag of $3,499 (roughly Rs. 2,90,000). It is available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage configurations.

Apple Rolls Out iOS 18.3 Update for iPhone With Key Changes to AI Notification Summaries: What’s New

iOS 18.3 update for iPhone was rolled out by Apple on Monday. It is substantially smaller than the first two numbered updates which introduced notable features, most of which are part of Apple Intelligence — the company's artificial intelligence (AI) suite. However, it brings a key change to Notification Summaries following the recent criticism faced by the Apple Intelligence-powered feature for generating erroneous summaries of news headlines. It also includes other tweaks related to the Calculator app and Apple Intelligence' opt-in system.

iOS 18.3 Update for iPhone: What's New

According to Apple's release notes, the iOS 18.3 update is compatible with the existing models which support iOS 18. One of the most notable additions in the update is the changes to Notification Summaries. The feature is now turned off by default and made unavailable for the News & Entertainment category. Users who opt-in to use it will be able to do so when it is made available again.

The feature, introduced with iOS 18.1 last year, condenses information acquired from notifications to let users quickly scan through key details in a summarised format. However, the company recently drew flak, most notably from BBC, which approached Apple about false information being added to AI summaries. And while Apple did not pull down the feature or release a fix at the time, the latest update disables it by default. It now also appears with a warning that says “may contain errors.”.

Another change to notification summaries is to its presentation. Apple says it will now appear with italicised text to help users distinguish it better from other notifications.

Apple has also made Apple Intelligence an opt-out feature. Previously opt-in, users will now have to manually opt-out if they do not wish to use Apple's AI suite. This option is present in the Apple Intelligence & Siri Settings pane in the Settings app.

Visual Intelligence is also getting some tweaks. Apple says users can now add an event to Calendar from a poster or flyer. Further, it will be able to identify a wider range of animals and plants. This feature is exclusive to the iPhone 16 models and is accessible via the Camera Control button.

Meanwhile, the company has brought back a key functionality to the Calculator app. With iOS 18, Apple removed the ability to repeat the last mathematical operation by tapping the equals sign repeatedly. iOS 18.3 brings it back. Along with these changes, the update also carries fixes for bugs related to Genmoji, HealthKit, and Writing Tools.

Gadgets 360 staff can confirm that the update and its features are now available to use on iPhone.
