Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Tipped to Get 200-Megapixel Main Camera, Improved Under-Display Camera

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 is expected to be announced in the second half of this year. While we have already heard a lot about the book-style foldable phone in recent months, a new leak now suggests the phone's camera details. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is tipped to come with a new primary rear camera, which will be an improvement over the Galaxy Z Fold 6. The under-display camera found on the inner screen is also said to see an upgrade. Other sensors and the selfie camera could remain the same as its predecessor.

Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 Camera Details Tipped

According to a report by Galaxyclub.nl (Dutch), Samsung will equip the Galaxy Z Fold 7 with a 200-megapixel main rear camera. The foldable is said to feature the same main camera that is used in the flagship Galaxy S25 Ultra. Notably, the Galaxy Z Fold Special Edition, which launched in select markets last year, also features a similar 200-megapixel sensor. The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is said to arrive as the first Z Fold phone outside South Korea to have a 200-megapixel shooter.

The inclusion of a 200-megapixel primary sensor in the Galaxy Z Fold 7 would be a huge upgrade over the Galaxy Z Fold 6's camera system. However, other camera sensors could remain the same as the predecessor, which gets a 50-megapixel main sensor, a 12-megapixel secondary ultra wide sensor, and a 10-megapixel telephoto sensor.

Meanwhile, the under-display camera embedded in the inner screen of the Galaxy Z Fold 7 is also said to get an upgrade, but more details weren't specified. It is tipped to feature a 10-megapixel selfie camera on the cover screen similar to the Galaxy Z Fold 6.

Samsung is expected to announce the Galaxy Z Fold 7 sometime in July alongside the Galaxy Z Flip 7. They are said to launch alongside the company's first tri-fold smartphone.

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 could come with the same price as the preceding Galaxy Z Fold 6. It could start at Rs. 1,64,999 for the base 12GB + 256GB configuration. The Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy SoC is expected to power the phone. It is likely to be available in 256GB, 512GB, and 1TB storage options with support for 12GB of RAM.

iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max Tipped to Get Liquid Cooling for Improved Thermal Management

iPhone 17 series is rumoured to be in development as the successor to the iPhone 16 lineup. Over the last few months, the rumour mill has suggested that the purported phones could have a key new feature for managing thermals — liquid cooling. The iPhone 16 series doesn't have this feature, which could help in keeping the phone running cool under pressure. While there has been contrasting news regarding the availability of this technology on the iPhone 17 series, a new report suggests that it could make its way to only the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max.

Liquid Cooling on iPhone 17 Pro Models

In a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, tipster Instant Digital (translated from Chinese) suggested that the iPhone 17 Pro and the iPhone 17 Pro Max will use a “steam cavity” for heat dissipation. This essentially translates into the use of a vapour chamber, which means liquid cooling.

As per the tipster, both flagship iPhone models will leverage this technology to compliment the thermal management of the A19 Pro SoC, which is expected to power the phones. It is speculated to improve the high-load performance. Notably, Apple's current flagship models — the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max — are equipped with a graphene sheet for heat management and to prevent overheating.

This information builds upon previous claims by several tipsters. It was first revealed by TF Security Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo last year although the vapour chamber heat sink was said to be limited to the iPhone 17 Pro Max. In a subsequent leak of information, Chinese publication MyDrivers contradicted Kuo's claims, stating that liquid cooling will be coming to all iPhone 17 models instead.

However, it is worth noting that there are several months until the iPhone 17 series is launched, and these leaks are advised to be taken with a grain of salt. More details about the handsets are likely to surface in the months leading up to their debut.

WhatsApp for Android Could Soon Let Users Turn Off Camera Before Video Calls

WhatsApp is developing a new functionality which may provide Android users with more choice when it comes to picking up video calls, according to a new report. The instant messaging platform is said to be testing a new option which offers the choice of turning off the device's camera before picking up a video call. The in-development WhatsApp feature was reportedly discovered following an APK teardown of a beta version of the app.

Turning Off Camera Before Video Calls on WhatsApp

The feature was spotted by Android Authority following an APK teardown of the WhatsApp beta app for Android version 2.25.7.3. While the feature isn't available to the public as of now, the publication managed to activate it by tinkering with the app. It is said to offer an option dubbed Turn off your video when the receiver gets a video call, enabling them to turn off the video before picking it up. This means the call will reportedly be received in a voice-only mode.

If the camera is already off, the app may also display another Accept without video prompt as a confirmation. The report suggests WhatsApp users will have the option of turning on the camera mid-way during the call using the Turn on your video option.

At present, WhatsApp does not offer a similar functionality. While users can still turn off their video feed during a video call, they can only do so after picking it up. However, the in-development feature is expected to bring a functionality not too dissimilar from Google Meet, Microsoft Teams, and other video-conferencing platforms.

Other WhatsApp Features in Development

Past reports suggest that the instant messaging platform is developing several new features for Android users. One of the reported additions is a UPI Lite functionality which is speculated to simplify the payment process by enabling users to carry out transactions without entering the PIN.

Meanwhile, WhatsApp may also soon roll out a new interface for Meta AI — its conversational artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot. It is said to offer an automatic voice mode along with prompt suggestions to help users get started.

NASA Delays SPHEREx and PUNCH Missions Due to SpaceX Vehicle Checks

NASA's planned launch of the SPHEREx and PUNCH missions has been postponed, with a new date yet to be confirmed. Originally scheduled for 10:09 p.m. EST on March 8, the missions were set to lift off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Launch Complex 4E at Vandenberg Space Force Base in California. The delay has been attributed to ongoing vehicle checkouts by SpaceX, as per an update on the company's website. The missions were planned as part of NASA's Launch Services Program, which seeks to optimise commercial launches for scientific exploration.

SPHEREx to Study the Universe's Origins

According to reports, the Spectro-Photometer for the History of the Universe, Epoch of Reionization and Ices Explorer (SPHEREx) is designed to observe infrared light from the distant universe. Unlike the James Webb Space Telescope, which focuses on high-resolution imaging of single galaxies, SPHEREx will provide a broad-scale view, mapping the sky every six months. The data collected will contribute to research on cosmic inflation and the distribution of water and organic molecules in space.

PUNCH to Examine Solar Wind and Space Weather

It is reported that the Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission consists of four satellites that will monitor the transition of the Sun's outer atmosphere into the solar wind. Scientists aim to study coronal mass ejections (CMEs) and how they interact with Earth's magnetosphere. Understanding these solar phenomena is critical for predicting space weather, which can impact power grids, satellites, and astronaut safety.

A revised launch schedule is expected to be announced following the completion of SpaceX's technical evaluations.

Aditya-L1’s SUIT Telescope Captures First-Ever Solar Flare Kernel, Revealing Unseen Solar Activity

India's space-based solar observatory, Aditya-L1, has recorded a never-before-seen solar flare phenomenon, marking a major step in solar research. The Solar Ultra-violet Imaging Telescope (SUIT) onboard the spacecraft captured an image of a solar flare ‘kernel' in the lower solar atmosphere. The observation was made in the Near Ultra-violet (NUV) spectrum, revealing crucial insights into solar activity and its potential effects on Earth. The mission, launched by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) on September 2, 2023, continues to provide significant scientific data.

Findings from the Study

According to research published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters, the SUIT instrument observed an X6.3-class solar flare on February 22, 2024. The flare's intensity, classified among the most powerful solar eruptions, was studied in the NUV wavelength range (200-400 nm) for the first time in such detail. The recorded data suggests that energy from the flare spreads through different atmospheric layers, reinforcing theories about solar dynamics while offering new insights into plasma behaviour.

How Aditya-L1 Observes Solar Flares

Aditya-L1's position at the first Earth-Sun Lagrange Point (L1), located 1.5 million kilometres from Earth, allows uninterrupted solar observation. The SUIT payload, developed by the Inter-University Centre for Astronomy and Astrophysics (IUCAA) in collaboration with ISRO, can capture high-resolution images in 11 different NUV bands. Other onboard instruments, including the Solar Low Energy X-ray Spectrometer (SoLEXS) and High Energy L1 Orbiting X-ray Spectrometer (HEL1OS), monitor solar X-ray emissions, enabling comprehensive analysis of flare activity.

Key Scientific Implications

The observations confirmed that brightening detected in the lower solar atmosphere during the flare correlated with increased plasma temperature in the solar corona. The findings validate existing solar flare theories while presenting new data that could refine the understanding of solar physics. Scientists believe this could enhance predictions of space weather, which affects satellite communications and Earth's magnetic field.

Future Prospects of Aditya-L1

With its advanced instrumentation fully operational, Aditya-L1 is expected to reshape solar physics research. The data from the mission is anticipated to contribute significantly to global studies on solar behaviour, aiding in a deeper understanding of the Sun's impact on space and Earth's environment.

Enceladus' Geysers May Not Come from Underground Ocean, Study Suggests

Saturn's moon Enceladus has been a subject of scientific intrigue due to its massive water plumes, which were initially believed to be linked to an underground ocean beneath its icy crust. The idea that this ocean could sustain microbial life made it a prime target for astrobiological studies. However, new research suggests that the source of these geysers may not be the deep subsurface ocean, but rather a mushy layer within the ice shell itself. This finding challenges previous assumptions about the habitability of Enceladus and raises new questions about the mechanisms behind the moon's plumes.

New Theory on Enceladus' Geysers

According to a study published in Geophysical Research Letters, researchers from Dartmouth College propose that the plumes erupting from Enceladus may not require fractures that extend entirely through the ice shell to the underground ocean. Instead, they suggest that a slushy, salt-laden layer within the ice could act as the source of the water vapor and ice particles seen in the plumes. This theory is based on the observation that the moon's icy surface contains salts, which lower the melting point of ice, allowing it to form a semi-liquid state in certain regions.

Shear Heating and Fractures in the Ice

Scientists have pointed to "tiger stripe" fractures in the moon's southern hemisphere as key locations where these eruptions occur. The study suggests that friction between ice layers, known as shear heating, could generate enough warmth to maintain a slushy state within the ice shell. This would create a reservoir of briny water close to the surface, supplying the plumes without requiring a direct connection to the deep ocean.

Gases and Plume Composition

As per the reports, the composition of the plumes observed by NASA's Cassini spacecraft could be explained by the melting of gas-rich ice structures called clathrates. These formations trap molecular hydrogen, carbon dioxide, and methane within the ice. Partial melting of these structures could release hydrogen while retaining other gases, potentially accounting for the chemical composition detected in the plumes.

Future Investigations

While this study provides an alternative explanation for Enceladus' geysers, further research is required to determine how the slushy zone replenishes itself over time. Scientists continue to analyse Cassini's data to refine their understanding of the processes shaping the moon's icy surface and its potential for sustaining life.

Apple Reportedly Developing Refreshed C1 Modem With mmWave Support for iPhone

A refreshed version of Apple's C1 modem is said to be in development which adds a key functionality missing from the current model, as per the claims by an industry analyst. Introduced with the iPhone 16e last month, the C1 is the Cupertino-based technology giant's first-ever proprietary cellular modem which potentially reduces the company's dependency on Qualcomm. However, it is not without its caveats. A glance at the iPhone 16e's specifications reveals that the phone lacks mmWave support due to this modem, but that may soon change.

mmWave Support on Apple's C1 Modem

According to TF Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, C1 modem's architecture on the iPhone 16e comprises a 4nm or 5nm baseband, 7nm low-frequency transceivers, 7nm transreceivers for immediate frequency, and a 55nm Power Management Integrated Circuit (PMIC). It only supports up to sub-6GHz 5G.

Although the company claims C1 to be the “most power-efficient modem ever”, the lack of mmWave, which is the extremely high frequency (EHF) band, potentially results in slower download and upload speeds. To address this, Apple is said to be developing its successor. Kuo claims the refreshed version of the C1 modem is unlikely to adopt a 3nm baseband due to it not being the most power-hungry component in a modem.

To enable mmWave support, Apple is expected to add transreceivers and front-end components based on a 28nm node. The analyst emphasises that while adding mmWave support to this modem isn't particularly a challenging process, balancing between a stable performance and low power consumption remains a hurdle.

While Kuo did not reveal which iPhone the new modem could be featured in, Apple was previously reported to also include the C1 modem in the purported iPhone 17 Air. If this phone gets the refreshed variant, users may be able to take advantage of the fastest possible download and upload 5G speeds courtesy of mmWave support, depending on the availability in the region.

Solar Storm to Trigger Northern Lights in US: Visibility, Timing & Impact

A solar storm is set to reach Earth tonight, with potential geomagnetic activity that could make the northern lights visible as far south as New York and Idaho. The event is the result of a coronal mass ejection (CME) from the Sun, which was recorded on March 1. The Space Weather Prediction Center (SWPC) of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has classified this as a G1-level geomagnetic storm, with a possibility of stronger G2 conditions. As a result, skywatchers in mid-latitudes may witness the aurora borealis in areas where the skies remain clear.

Geomagnetic Storm Forecast and Impact

According to NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, the CME is expected to make contact with Earth's magnetic field between March 4 and March 5. The intensity of the storm is predicted to peak between 7:00 p.m. EST and 10:00 p.m. EST on March 5. While a G1 storm is considered minor, space weather physicist Tamitha Skov has indicated that G2 storm conditions remain a possibility, increasing the chances of a more widespread auroral display.

Geomagnetic storms occur when charged particles from the Sun interact with Earth's magnetosphere, potentially affecting satellite communications, power grids, and GPS accuracy. Experts have advised that radio operators, GPS users, and drone pilots may experience signal disruptions, especially during nighttime hours when such interference is more pronounced.

Visibility and Viewing Conditions

As per reports, aurora visibility will largely depend on atmospheric clarity and light pollution levels. NOAA's storm classification system places G1 storms as minor, meaning that the northern lights will likely be seen closer to high-latitude regions. If G2 storm conditions occur, visibility could extend further south. Observers are advised to find dark locations away from city lights for the best viewing experience.

For real-time updates and forecasts, space weather monitoring agencies continue to track the storm's progression.

NASA Tests Advanced Infrared Technology to Improve Wildfire Monitoring

Wildfires in California during January caused widespread destruction, affecting communities and ecosystems. To improve wildfire monitoring and response, NASA deployed a new scientific instrument capable of capturing high-resolution thermal infrared images. The Compact Fire Infrared Radiance Spectral Tracker (c-FIRST) was tested aboard NASA's B200 King Air aircraft over fire-hit areas in Pacific Palisades and Altadena. The instrument, developed for satellite-based missions, was assessed for its ability to provide real-time data on active and smoldering fires. Scientists aim to use this technology to enhance understanding of wildfire behavior and improve mitigation strategies.

Enhanced Fire Detection and Data Collection

According to reports, the c-FIRST instrument was developed and is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL), with support from NASA's Earth Science Technology Office. The compact design allows it to be deployed on airborne platforms, simulating satellite missions while providing near-instantaneous observations. The system captures a wide range of fire characteristics, including temperature variations across large areas. Unlike previous infrared imaging systems, c-FIRST can detect extremely high temperatures exceeding 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (550 degrees Celsius) with improved clarity.

In a statement, Sarath Gunapala, principal investigator for c-FIRST at NASA JPL, noted that current fire observation instruments do not fully capture fire attributes across the Earth system. He explained that limitations in past imaging technologies have resulted in gaps in data concerning wildfire frequency, size, and intensity.

Potential Benefits for Fire Management

As per sources, c-FIRST is expected to provide critical insights for firefighting agencies by identifying smoldering fires that could reignite under changing wind conditions. In a report, Gunapala stated that the instrument's ability to distinguish such fires in near real-time could support more effective wildfire management efforts.

KC Sujan, operations engineer for the B200 King Air, told that the aircraft's flight characteristics made it ideal for testing the instrument. With further evaluation, c-FIRST is expected to be integrated into future satellite missions, potentially improving global wildfire monitoring capabilities.

Earth's Orbit and Tilt Linked to Ice Age Cycles, Next One Delayed by Climate Change

Shifts in Earth's tilt and orbit have played a crucial role in the onset and end of ice ages over the past 800,000 years, researchers have found. A direct link between these changes and the movements of massive ice sheets has been identified, indicating that another ice age would have started within the next 11,000 years if not for the rising impact of greenhouse gas emissions. The study examined how Earth's axial tilt and orbit influence long-term climate patterns, revealing a strong correlation between these factors and the expansion and retreat of ice sheets.

Influence of Earth's Tilt and Wobble on Climate

According to the study published in Science, Earth's axis is currently tilted at an angle of 23.5 degrees. Over a cycle of approximately 41,000 years, this tilt fluctuates, affecting the amount of solar radiation reaching the poles. Another factor, Earth's precession, refers to the wobble of its axis, which influences the intensity of sunlight in equatorial regions over a 21,000-year cycle. Both of these variations have been found to dictate the timing of ice ages.

In an interview with Live Science, Stephen Barker, Professor of Earth Science at Cardiff University, explained that an "amazing correlation" was observed between Earth's obliquity, precession, and ice sheet movements. The study tracked data from ocean sediment cores containing microscopic shells, known as forams, which provided insight into historical ice sheet coverage.

Impact of Human Activity on Glaciation

A timeline for the next glaciation phase was estimated based on natural climate cycles. If human activity were not a factor, ice sheets would start expanding within 10,000 to 11,000 years, reaching their peak over the next 80,000 to 90,000 years before gradually retreating. However, carbon dioxide levels continue to rise, disrupting these natural cycles. Barker noted that sustained high CO2 levels would prevent a new glacial period from occurring.

The findings contribute to a broader understanding of Earth's long-term climate changes and the extent of human influence on natural processes. Researchers emphasise the importance of studying historical climate patterns to assess future climate projections accurately.

Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra First Impressions

Xiaomi has pulled the curtains from its all-new 15 series ahead of MWC 2025, which kicks off in Barcelona on Monday. The latest 15 series comprises the compact Xiaomi 15, the successor to the 14 and the big boy, 15 Ultra - the company's 'pinnacle' camera smartphone. As expected, both the phones come with Leica-tuned cameras. The partnership between Xiaomi and Leica for imagery technology has entered its fourth year, and we hope to see more camera-focused premium smartphones in the future. So far, companies have developed 21 products jointly covering five regions and 100 countries.

We do not know the India pricing yet and will have to wait until March 11, when Xiaomi reveals prices for the 15 series. In Europe, the Xiaomi 15 starts at EUR 999 (roughly Rs. 91,000), and the 15 Ultra price is set at EUR 1,499 (roughly Rs. 1,36,000). Considering these are successors to the 14 series, we expect both these phones to be available in more or less the same ballpark figure.

Xiaomi 15: Brings Snapdragon Elite SoC to a compact form factor

Xiaomi 15 brings back the familiar compact form factor from its predecessor, Xiaomi 14. And, mind you, that's one of the biggest highlights of the 15. The form factor is such that you can hold it easily in just one hand, and it's incredibly light, as it weighs under 200 grams and measures 8.08mm thick. It sports an aerospace-grade aluminium frame that wraps around the Xiaomi 15. The smooth edges sit well in your palms, giving an incredible hand feel, and a unibody design adds to the overall character of the compact device. The camera deco is again something that will remind you of the 14. The weight distribution is also balanced, but more on that as I spend more time with the device.

xiaomi 15 DISPLAY fi xiaomi 15

Xiaomi 15 features a 6.36-inch AMOLED display with 3200nits peak brightness and 120Hz refresh rate

It gets the proper suite of features you expect from a modern-day flagship, including an IP68 rating. The 15 comes in three subtle colours this year - Black, Green, and White. I got the White one which looks elegant. The 6.36-inch screen with ultra-thin bezels offers more screen space, and it looked bright enough in the limited time I spent with the 15. The Xiaomi 15 finally gets the Ultrasonic fingerprint sensor, which seemed snappy in my initial use. Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Elite powers it, so we can expect it to offer flagship-grade performance credentials. However, I will reserve any verdict regarding display and performance for the review.

Xiaomi 15 main camera samples (tap to expand)

The camera is one of the highlights of the Xiaomi 15, and it sports a triple camera setup featuring a 50-megapixel Light Fusion 900 image sensor with f/1.62 aperture and OIS, a 50-megapixel 60mm floating telephoto sensor, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera with 115-degree field of view. The camera app is the same as last year, with updates like an all-new Sunset Portrait mode added this year, which looked interesting during the keynote announcement. The initial camera test gave me some amazing-looking shots.

At the front, there's the 32-megapixel selfie sensor. The battery department probably has the biggest update as it packs a bigger battery than its predecessor, 14. The 15 packs a 5240mAh battery with 90W HyperCharge support. A more in-depth take on the camera and battery in our review.

xiaomi 15 back fi xiaomi 15

It packs a 5240mAh battery

Of course, we are in 2025 and won't have a product launch event without AI. Xiaomi 15 packs a suite of AI features, which I will break down in my review. The best news is that Google Gemini comes integrated with Xiaomi 15, which expands the horizon for users. There's Xiaomi HyperOS 2 based on Android 15 onboard.

Overall, the Xiaomi 15 looks like a great upgrade over the Xiaomi 14, but we will reserve our verdict for the review, so stay tuned.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra: Camera Beast

Now, jumping to the beast of a device - Xiaomi 15 Ultra, a smartphone built for professional photographers. Yes, consider this one going up against the likes of Vivo X200 Pro. The 14 Ultra was the first Ultra device from Xiaomi that went global, and now, the 15 Ultra is its successor this year. The company's intentions are clear: not to miss the ultra-premium audience.

xiaomi 15 ultra rear fi xiaomi 15 Ultra

It comes in a single 16GB and 512GB storage model

Starting with the design, the Xiaomi 15 Ultra's colour and design are inspired by the traditional professional camera and use materials like aerospace-grade glass fibre. It has small elements like an Ultra watermark just above the camera housing. The camera deco has been integrated into the back of the device, giving it a more seamless look and feel.

Compared to the 14 Ultra, the 15 Ultra rear camera housing is bigger, and the phone comes in Silver Chrome, White, and Black colours. I got the Silver Chrome, which feels like the best colour variant this year. The phone gets an IP68 rating.

xiaomi 15 ultra display fi xiaomi-15-ultra

It features a 6.73-inch WQHD AMOLED display with 3200nits peak brightness, 120Hz refresh rate and 522PPI pixel density

Xiaomi 15 Ultra has four-sided symmetrical curved glass for a more comfortable in-hand feel. At 229 grams, the phone is on the heavier side. It features a 6.73-inch WQHD+ AMOLED display with 3200nits peak brightness, 120Hz refresh rate, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision. In my limited time with the device, this is among the best displays I have ever seen on any Xiaomi phone. But I will reserve that submission until I can test the phone more. The hand feel of the smartphone is solid, and I was more comfortable using it without snapping a case on top. The 15 Ultra will come in a single 16GB and 512GB storage variant in India. With Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC under the hood, the 15 Ultra joins the elite club of flagship phones for performance credentials. In my initial time, the phone handled almost everything smoothly and quickly opened apps. The multitasking worked like a breeze. For the battery department, Xiaomi has fitted in a 5410mAh battery and supports 90W HyperCharge wired and 80W wireless HyperCharge. Again, I will reserve my verdict for our review.

Xiaomi 15 Ultra main camera samples (tap to expand)

Now, the fun part comes - cameras! It has a four-camera setup with a 50-megapixel primary sensor, a 200-megapixel telephoto sensor, a 50-megapixel floating telephoto sensor, and a 50-megapixel ultra-wide sensor. Of course, the 15 Ultra has a regular suite of Leica styles that enhance the overall experience. This one also gets the 1-inch sensor and f/1.63 aperture. There's a 32-megapixel selfie camera. In my limited time with the device, the 15 Ultra looks like a fantastic successor to the 14 Ultra in terms of camera upgrades. But I will be able to break it down more in my review.

It also runs on HyperOS 2, based on Android 15. It has a suite of AI features onboard, which I will test and detail in my review, so stay tuned.

Disclosure: Xiaomi India sponsored the correspondent's flights and hotel for the event in Barcelona.

Microsoft to Shut Down Skype in May Following Emergence of Microsoft Teams

Microsoft has announced that it is shutting down Skype — its legacy video-conferencing platform — starting May 5, 2025. Debuted in 2003, it was known for its Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP)-based video telephony, video-conferencing and voice calling capabilities which led to its acquisition by the Redmond-based technology company in 2011. Although Microsoft in 2023 revealed that the platform still had 36 million users, its market share has decreased over time, with Microsoft's own Teams app offering similar core features in addition to more functionality.

Skype Shutdown

As per Microsoft, it aims to streamline its free consumer communications offerings by making Teams the “modern communications and collaboration hub.” Aside from its one-on-one calls and group calls, messaging, and file sharing features, it offers more extensive functionality over Skype, including the ability to host meetings, manage calendars, and build and join communities for free. Microsoft reports that its video conferencing platform has grown nearly fourfold in the past two years, a surge initially driven by the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020 as users sought to stay connected for work, school, and personal use.

Skype Credit, subscriptions, and other paid features will no longer be offered to users, the tech giant says. Current Skype subscription users can continue to use their Skype Credits and subscriptions until the end of their next renewal period, while Skype Credits can be used till exhaustion. Starting May 5, Skype Dial Pad will be available to remaining paid users from the Skype web portal and within Teams.

With Skype's planned phasing out, Microsoft says they will be able to login to the free version of Teams using their existing Skype credentials on any supported device. Chats as well as contacts will automatically be migrated to the new platform. To move from Skype to Microsoft Teams, users need to:

  1. Download Teams on their device from the official Microsoft Teams website.
  2. Log in with Skype credentials.
  3. Start using Teams with all the Skype chats and contacts available from the offset.

Further, the tech giant is making sure users do not lose their connectivity during this transition period by allowing cross-platform calling. Microsoft Teams users will be able to call those with Skype accounts and vice versa.

Xiaomi 15 Series Gets Google Gemini Integration; HyperOS 2.0 Global Rollout Timeline Revealed

Xiaomi announced a collaboration with Google on Sunday, ahead of the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC 2025) in Barcelona. With this collaboration, the Mountain View-based tech giant will allow its Gemini artificial intelligence (AI) chatbot to be integrated within first-party Xiaomi apps in the Xiaomi 15 series. With this, Gemini can find information and take action across several apps of the Chinese consumer tech brand. Alongside, the company also launched the Xiaomi 15 Ultra and Xiaomi 15 in global markets.

Xiaomi Brings Gemini AI Capabilities to the Xiaomi 15 Series

In a blog post, the tech giant announced that it has partnered with Google to bring its AI services to the Xiaomi 15 series. With this collaboration, the Gemini AI chatbot is now being integrated with several Xiaomi apps including Xiaomi Notes, Xiaomi Calendar, and Xiaomi Clock. This is the first time the Chinese brand is letting a third-party AI service provider access its first-party apps.

While Xiaomi did not reveal a lot about how this integration will function, it highlighted that Gemini will now be able to access information from within these apps as well as complete several tasks in them. These tasks likely include actions such as creating a new note, calendar event, or setting an alarm. However, it is unclear whether users will also be able to use Gemini to edit or delete a note, event, or alarm.

In the footnote, Xiaomi stated that the availability of the feature might vary by device, country, and language, and that Internet connection will be required. Users of Xiaomi 15 series will likely have to use the Gemini AI assistant to access these features. These are server-based features, and an Internet connection will be required.

With this integration, Xiaomi is also expanding its AI features, which are so far limited to its camera features and the China-exclusive AI-powered Super Xiao AI assistant. The Xiaomi 15 series also gets Google's Circle to Search, which is an AI-powered visual lookup feature.

Xiaomi Reveals HyperOS 2 Rollout Timeline

Meanwhile, in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), the official handle of Xiaomi announced that the HyperOS 2 operating system will now be globally available out-of-the-box with the Xiaomi 15 series and give users early access to the Hyper AI suite of features. The company, however, did not delve too much into the AI features that users will get to try out. The announcement also hints at the Chinese brand's ambition to rival Samsung's Galaxy AI features and Oppo's suite of in-house AI tools.

As per the post, the HyperOS 2 with HyperAI is now available in the Xiaomi 15 and Xiaomi 15 Ultra models in global markets. The company's recently released Pad 7 and Pad 7 Pro will also get the update out-of-the-box alongside the Xiaomi Watch S4 and Redmi Watch 5. However, the Watch S4 and Watch 5 will not be getting AI features.
