The first solar eclipse of 2024 is all set to darken the skies on April 8. This particular event will be a total solar eclipse, a rare occurrence on Earth. After this event, the next total solar eclipse in the same region will not be seen for two more decades. A total solar eclipse of similar impact is expected in 2044. This event will mainly be visible in North America, including Mexico, the US, and Canada. While a few more territories will observe it partially, the rest of the world cannot see it directly. Here's everything you need to know about the latest solar eclipse, along with a list of all upcoming solar eclipses and more.

What is a Solar Eclipse?

A solar eclipse is an astronomical phenomenon where the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun and blocks the Sun's light either entirely or partially. These events are infrequent and occasional since the Moon needs to be in the same plane as the Sun and the Earth, which does not always happen. Even when an alignment does occur, it is more likely to be partial than full. This is the reason why total solar eclipses are so rare.

On average, the Earth can get between two to five solar eclipses in a year. However, most of these are partial eclipses and are not very noticeable. Total eclipses are dramatic and turn the sky dark, but they are only visible from a few locations. This is why the opportunity to experience an eclipse is often called a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

Different Types of Solar Eclipses

There are three types of solar eclipses. A solar eclipse can be defined as partial, total, or annular, depending on the Moon's position. Here are the full details:

Partial solar eclipse: A partial solar eclipse occurs when the Moon partially covers the Sun, but some of the Sun's light can still reach the Earth. When a partial solar eclipse occurs, a portion of the Sun appears to have vanished. It can be observed in a larger area.

Total solar eclipse: A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon and the Sun are on the same plane, and the Moon is at such a distance from the Earth that it covers the Sun for a brief period. Unlike a partial solar eclipse, it is usually visible from a smaller strip of land.

Annular solar eclipse: Finally, during an annular solar eclipse, the Moon is placed far away from the Earth and is unable to cover the Sun entirely. At the peak of this solar eclipse, the Moon covers the central portion of the Sun, and only a ring of light can be seen from the Earth.

Total Solar Eclipse 2024: Date, Time, and Place

The total solar eclipse of 2024 will occur on April 8. The total darkening of the sky, also known as totality, will be visible across a 185-kilometre stretch between Mexico, the US, and Canada. It will start on Mexico's Pacific coast at 11:07am PDT, and the eclipse will end on the Atlantic coast of Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16pm NDT. As many as 18 different US States will also get to see it.

The total solar eclipse will not be visible from India. It will begin at 9:12 pm IST, a few hours after the Sun is set. Totality will start at 10:08pm IST, and the eclipse will end at 2:22am IST on April 9.

Total Solar Eclipse 2024: How to Watch it Live Online

While people in India and other countries, excluding North America, cannot physically witness the total solar eclipse, astronomy enthusiasts can still follow it online. There will be multiple live streams covering this rare celestial event. NASA will start its live stream on April 8 at 5:00pm GMT (10:30pm IST) and continue until 8:00pm GMT (1:30am IST). You can watch the stream here.

Skywatching website timeanddate.com will also live stream the total solar eclipse on its YouTube channel starting at 4:30pm GMT (10:00pm IST) on April 8. The stream will provide real-time updates and background information as well.

Finally, the University of Maine will send a high-altitude science balloon into the sky and live stream a view of the total solar eclipse from the stratosphere. It can be watched here on April 8, starting at noon GMT (5:30pm IST).

Things to Remember to View Upcoming Solar Eclipse Safely

While it is never recommended to look directly at the Sun since its intense brightness and harmful ultraviolet radiation can cause permanent damage to the unaided eye, this becomes even more important during a solar eclipse. Darkened skies can create a false impression that the Sun's intensity is reduced and that it is safe to look at it; however, any escaping sunlight will cause the same amount of damage to the eye. This is why precautions must always be taken before viewing a solar eclipse event.

1. People should use safe solar viewing glasses when watching a solar eclipse directly.

2. Regular sunglasses, no matter how dark, are not safe to look at the Sun directly.

3. Binoculars, camera lenses, telescopes, or any other optical devices should not be used with solar viewing glasses, as concentrated solar rays can burn through the filter.

4. Proper solar filters should be added to optical devices before viewing the Sun through them.

5. If solar glasses are unavailable, people can opt for indirect viewing of the solar eclipse. NASA highlighted the pinhole projector method, where a small hole punched into an index card can project an image of the Sun on a surface through which the eclipse can be seen.

iPhone 16 Pro Models' Thinner Bezels Pose Challenge to Apple Suppliers: Report

iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max could arrive later this year with even slimmer bezels than their predecessors, according to previous reports. The successors to last year's iPhone 15 Pro series — which also arrived with thinner bezels than the company's 2022 models — are also said to sport slightly larger screens, while reducing the black borders around the screen. However, the production of these displays is proving to be difficult for Apple's suppliers, according to a report.

The Elec reports (via 9to5Mac) that Apple is using its Border Reduction Structure (BRS) technology to reduce the size of the bottom bezel on the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. In order to achieve this, the company is utilising an under-display technology (related to wiring and circuits) that has started to pose a challenge for Apple's component suppliers, and the report states that none of Apple's suppliers have managed to produce enough units to meet the company's standards.

Apple is expected to rely on three suppliers for the iPhone 16 series of smartphones, according to the report. BOE (Jingdongfang) could produce displays for the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus, while LG Display could supply OLED screens for the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max. Meanwhile, Samsung Display is reportedly expected to produce screens for all four models in the lineup.

While the size of bezels could get smaller on this year's iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, there's currently no details related to the ones on the standard models — the iPhone 16 and iPhone 16 Plus. These handsets are tipped to arrive with a refreshed rear camera module, which will feature a new vertical layout, Apple's first change to the camera island since the iPhone 13 was introduced in 2021.

Recently leaked images of purported dummy units of all four models in the iPhone 16 series appear to corroborate the claims made in previous leaks, The new vertical pill-shaped camera island is visible on the standard models, while all four models are shown to feature an Action button and the new 'capture' button that is said to be making its way to the iPhone 16 series later this year.

Redmi K80 Series Said to Get Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 SoC, 5,500mAH Battery

Redmi K80 series is expected to launch later this year. Details regarding the purported models have surfaced online. Previously, the possible monikers of the handsets were tipped. A recent leak suggests some display, chipset and battery specifications of the expected models. The company has yet to officially announce the lineup. It is expected to succeed the Redmi K70 series, which was unveiled in China in November 2023. The rumoured Redmi K80 smartphones are expected to come with upgrades over the preceding handsets.

Tipster Smart Pikachu has shared in a Weibo post that the Redmi K80 models are expected to be backed by 5,500mAh batteries. An earlier leak by the same tipster suggested that the upcoming lineup is likely to include only a base Redmi K80 and a Redmi K80 Pro model. Notably, the preceding Redmi K70 and Redmi K70 Pro handsets come with 5,000mAh batteries. Therefore, according to the newest leak, the purported K80 series is expected to pack bigger batteries.

The tipster added that the vanilla Redmi K80 is expected to be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, while the Redmi K80 Pro is likely to come with the yet-unannounced Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chipset. The older Redmi K70 and K70 Pro carry a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 and Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 SoC, respectively.

The Redmi K80 models are also tipped to get 2K resolution displays. For comparison, the base and Pro Redmi K70 handsets are equipped with 6.67-inch 2K OLED screens. The tipster added that the Redmi K80 series smartphones will come with metal frames and glass backs. The design of the purported models has not yet surfaced online. 

The Redmi K70 lineup also launched with a Redmi K70E model. Based on earlier leaks, since the Redmi K80 lineup is unlikely to feature an "E" model, it is speculated to launch as one of the Redmi Note 14 models, instead.

iQoo Z9 Review: A Reliable Mid-Range Phone With Decent Cameras

iQoo launched the Neo 9 Pro in February, followed by the more affordable iQoo Z9 last month. The latter offers some of the best mid-range specifications in the segment. We've spent some time testing the iQoo Z9's day-to-day performance, camera quality, and battery endurance. This handset competes with other smartphones around the Rs. 20,000 mark in India, such as the Realme 12+ 5G and Moto G84 5G, as well as the more expensive Honor X9b and Nothing Phone 2a.

iQoo Z9 price in India

The price of the iQoo Z9 in India is set at Rs. 19,999 for the base model, which has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of built-in storage. The company also offers the handset in a 256GB storage variant — this is the model I've reviewed — that costs Rs. 21,999.

The phone is available in Brushed Green and Graphene Blue in India. Like the company's other smartphones, the iQoo Z9 comes with a transparent TPU case, a SIM ejector tool, a 44W charging brick, and a USB Type-A to USB Type-C cable.

iQoo Z9 Review: Design

We received the Brushed Green colour variant of the iQoo Z9 for review. The handset has an interesting design with paintbrush-like strokes flowing from the rear camera module towards the bottom of the panel. There's a small iQoo logo located on the lower half, and there's no other visible branding.

Aside from the new pattern, the rear panel on the handset bears a striking resemblance to the iQoo Z7 Pro that was launched in India in August 2023, including the vertically aligned rear cameras located in a square-shaped camera island with rounded edges and a shiny metallic finish, which is a fingerprint magnet. The volume buttons are located on the right edge, above the power button.

Despite the 5,000mAh battery inside, the phone doesn't feel too heavy in day-to-day use. It has flat edges, which make it easy to hold. While it's not exactly slippery, it's probably better to use it with the TPU case that ships with the phone. The iQoo Z9 has slim bezels, except near the chin. It has an IP54 rating for dust and water resistance.

iQoo Z9 Review: Specifications and software

The iQoo Z9 runs on an octa-core 4nm Dimensity 7200 SoC that comprises two Arm Cortex-A715 cores clocked at 2.8GHz and six Cortex-A510 cores. This midrange MediaTek chipset is paired with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM, and you can enable an “Extended RAM” feature that utilises up to 8GB of unused storage to bring the available storage up to 16 GB.

This smartphone supports 5G, 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth 5.3, and GPS connectivity, along with a USB Type-C port. However, it does not have NFC connectivity, which means you can't use the tap-to-pay features available on apps like Google Pay and PhonePe. The responsive in-display fingerprint scanner takes less than a second to unlock the phone.

Thankfully, the iQoo Z9 runs on Android 14 out-of-the-box, along with Funtouch OS 14. Like the company's other smartphones we recently reviewed — the iQoo 12 and Neo 9 Pro —the operating system comes with the V-Appstore that will go out of its way to notify you about new apps to install. However, unlike those phones, you can't disable the V-Appstore on this handset. The Home Screen also includes Hot Apps and Hot Games that prompt you to install new applications and games.

According to the company, the handset will get two OS updates and three years of security updates, which is par for the course at this price segment, with one exception — the Samsung Galaxy A15 is promised four OS upgrades and five years of security updates. The iQoo Z9 packs a 5,000mAh battery and can be charged at 44W via the included adapter.

iQoo Z9 Review: Performance

With the Dimensity 7200 chipset under the hood, the iQoo Z9 should theoretically offer the best performance for a midrange smartphone priced under Rs. 20,000. In day-to-day usage, the phone is zippy and lets you switch between apps without reloading them. It also features a dedicated game mode found on the company's other phones that optimises performance while you're gaming.

Games like Asphalt 9 run very smoothly on the iQoo Z9, while titles like Battlegrounds Mobile India can be played on the High setting with the Smooth preset without any throttling after about 45 minutes of gaming. I was able to run Genshin Impact on the iQoo Z9, but it was only somewhat smooth — even after selecting the lowest graphics setting in the game.

We also ran a few performance benchmarks on the iQoo Z9 and found that it scored considerably higher than other smartphones in this price segment. On AnTuTu 10, the phone scored 687,545 points, while its single-core and multi-core scores on Geekbench were 1,151 and 2,669, respectively. In the PCMark Work 3.0 benchmark, the iQoo Z9 scored 13,319 points.

The iQoo Z9 scored 6,654 points in the Sling Shot and 5,766 in the Sling Shot Extreme tests on 3DMark. It managed to get 4,126 points and 4,205 points in the Wild Life and Wild Life Unlimited benchmark tests, respectively. Meanwhile, iQoo's mid-range phone scored 6,058 points (108fps) on the GFXBench T-Rex test, while the Manhattan 3.1 benchmark resulted in a score of 3702 points (60fps), and the Car Chase test returned a lower score of 1,954 points (33fps).

The handset sports a 6.67-inch full-HD+ (1,080x2,400 pixels) AMOLED display with 120Hz refresh rate with 394ppi pixel density and a peak brightness of 1800 nits. I faced some visibility issues in very bright lighting conditions, especially when using the phone outdoors in the afternoon. There are three display colour profiles to choose from — standard, professional, and bright. While this is a subjective choice, I preferred using the standard mode (default)

The 5,000mAh battery on the iQoo Z9 allows you to go for several hours before you need to recharge the phone again. In our HD battery loop test, the handset lasted for about 23 hours and 14 minutes. With a mix of gaming, capturing a handful of photos and video, and about an hour of gaming, I had between 23 percent to 29 percent of battery left at the end of the day. After draining the battery, the phone took about 32 minutes to go to 50 percent and about 55 minutes for a full charge.

iQoo Z9 Review: Cameras

The iQoo Z9 is equipped with a 50-megapixel primary camera, a Sony IMX882 sensor with an f/1.8 aperture, and an unspecified 2-megapixel depth sensor with an f/2.4 aperture. The phone has a 16-megapixel front-facing camera with an f/2.0 aperture for selfies and video chats.

Images captured with the primary camera are sharp, and colours are displayed accurately when you're shooting with the default zoom (1x). The camera interface lets you quickly switch to 2x, which seems to be an in-sensor crop that also delivers images with ample detail. This camera works well for human subjects, plants, and pets. You can also click good portrait images if there's enough natural light.

There's only one usable rear camera on the iQoo Z9, which performs reliably during the day. However, if you're looking to capture images in low-light conditions, you're better off using the built-in night mode. If your subject isn't moving, the night mode can deliver far better shots than the default mode, reducing the amount of noise and artefacts without too much softening.

As there's no ultra-wide-angle camera, I found myself stepping backwards to click images of large subjects that were close to me, such as buildings. This is not a problem in most scenarios but can make clicking some photos tricky. Unlike similar phones in this price segment, the iQoo Z9 is not equipped with a macro camera for close-up shots.

The built-in night mode does a good job in low-light scenarios

 

The primary camera also includes a 50-megapixel mode that takes images rather quickly while delivering images with a higher resolution than the standard mode. This mode is best used on subjects that are nearby and results in images that have more detail and a slightly larger file size.

Selfies taken on the iQoo Z9 are clear and look good when there's enough lighting, which means that you should be fine if you click images of yourself during the day. In low-light conditions, selfies captured by the handset contain some noise, and images aren't as sharp as the phone tends to smoothen these images.

The iQoo Z9's video performance is on par with other smartphones in this price segment. You can record 1080p videos at 60fps and 30fps, while 4K videos can be recorded at 30fps. It's worth noting that the 1080p/60fps mode offers better video stabilisation compared to the 4K option, which was a worthy trade-off, in my opinion.

iQoo Z9 Review: Verdict

If you're looking for an affordable mid-range smartphone with good performance and decent photo quality, the iQoo Z9 is a good option to consider at this price point. It offers reliable battery life and has a bright AMOLED screen, while the processor definitely punches above its weight and makes up for the less-than-ideal UFS 2.2 storage.

However, the handset faces tough competition from smartphones like last year's Samsung Galaxy M34 — while this handset's Exynos 1280 processor is slower than the one on the iQoo Z9, it boasts better camera quality and a (subjectively) better software experience, with a longer software support window. Similarly, the Realme 12+ 5G has an additional ultra-wide-angle camera and supports faster charging at 67W.

There's also the Poco X6 5G, which offers decent primary camera performance and packs a 5,100mAh battery, even though it comes with Android 13 out of the box in 2024. If your budget is a little higher, you can also consider the Nothing Phone 2a, which features a good primary camera and clean software. However, it doesn't come with a charging brick inside the box, an issue you won't face with the iQoo Z9.

Google to Show Token Balances in Wallets Running on Bitcoin, Polygon, Fantom Blockchains

Google, in a crypto-supportive move, has decided to show balances of crypto wallets through a simple Google search. The balance information for wallets based on the blockchains of Bitcoin, Arbitrum, Avalanche, Optimism, Polygon, and Fantom will now be shown on Google once the wallet address is correctly typed into the Search bar. Heavily visited web platforms like Google easing out the process of engaging with digital wallets could rope-in more members to the digital wallets space.

The balances that Google will show may not be updated in real-time and would only show balances in the native tokens of the blockchains that are eligible for this Google feature. Screenshots of the feature have already begun floating on social networking platforms.

It is, however, noteworthy that blockchain transactions are saved on public domains. A wallet address does not reveal the identity of the wallet holder. The control of each wallet is stored in its private key, that is possessed by the wallet holder.

This development comes at a time when the crypto sector is sprinting on a bull run. Bitcoin, for instance, recently touched its new all-time high of over $73,000 (roughly Rs. 60.8 lakh). Standard Chartered predicts that Bitcoin is projected to reach the price mark of $200,000 (roughly Rs. 1.66 crore) by 2025.

Thanks to the bull run in the crypto market, along with the introduction of ETFs in the US and ETNs in the UK, more investors could join the crypto sector in the coming days subsequently leading to more visits on Google for wallet balance check.

This is not the first time, that Google has integrated such a pro-crypto service to Search. Earlier this month, Google Search started showing wallet balances for active holders of the Ethereum Name Service (ENS). The ENS compresses complex wallet addresses into humanly readable, short addresses.

Vivo X Fold 3 Tipped to Launch in India Soon, Said to Be Country's Thinnest Foldable

Vivo X Fold 3 was recently launched in China alongside the Vivo X Fold 3 Pro. The base variant is powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset and packs a 5,500mAh battery with support for wired fast charging. The book-style foldable smartphone carries an 8.03-inch 2K primary display and a 50-megapixel triple rear camera system. The handset is now tipped to launch in India. Although there has not been an official confirmation, the Indian variant is expected to share similar specifications as its Chinese counterpart.

The base Vivo X Fold 3 is likely to launch in India soon, according to a 91Mobiles report, which adds that the model will be the “slimmest foldable in the industry.” Notably, when folded, the Vivo X Fold 3 is 10.2mm thick. The Indian variant of the handset is also likely to measure the same. The preceding Vivo X Fold 2, particularly the String Shadow Black (translated from Chinese) variant, measures 12.9mm in thickness when folded. 

In China, the Vivo X Fold 3 launched with an 8.03-inch 2K E7 AMOLED main display and a 6.53-inch AMOLED cover screen with 1,172 x 2,748 pixels resolution and Ultra-Thin Glass (UTG) protection. It is powered by an octa-core Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC paired with up to 16GB of LPDDR5X RAM and up to 1TB of UFS4.0 inbuilt storage. The phone ships with Android 14-based OriginOS 4.

For optics, the Vivo X Fold 3 sports a triple rear camera unit which includes a 50-megapixel VCS bionic primary sensor, a 50-megapixel sensor paired with an ultra-wide-angle lens, and another 50-megapixel portrait shooter. Both cover and main displays have one 32-megapixel selfie camera each. The phone is backed by a 5,500mAh battery with support for 80W wired fast charging. When unfolded, the handset weighs 219g and measures 159.96mm x 142.69mm x 4.65mm. When folded it measures 159.96mm x 72.7mm x 10.2mm.

The Vivo X Fold 3 starts in China at CNY 6,999 (roughly Rs. 80,000) for the 12GB + 256GB option, while the 16GB + 256GB and 16GB + 512GB variants are priced at CNY 7,499 (roughly Rs. 87,800) and CNY 7,999 (Rs. 93,600), respectively. The top-of-the-line 16GB + 1TB version of the Vivo X Fold 3 is listed at CNY 8,999 (roughly Rs. 1,00,700). It is available in two colour options - Feather White and Thin Wing Black (translated from Chinese).

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra Leaked Teasers Suggests Design, Key Specifications

Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is expected to be unveiled soon. It is likely to launch alongside two other models. While the Motorola Edge 50 Pro is set to launch in India on April 3, a third Motorola Edge 50 Fusion model could also be unveiled soon. The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra design had recently leaked via renders suggesting multiple colour options and hinting at some key features of the handset. Now a tipster has shared short video teasers of the handset that once again suggest the design and key specifications.

Tipster Evan Blass (@evleaks) shared a series of small clips on X (formerly Twitter) that show the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra from different angles. The videos also suggest some of the features of the handset. It is seen in a beige colour option in the first clip, where we also get a close-up of the expected triple rear camera unit, the curved display edges, and the textured back panel.

In successive clips, we see the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra with speakers placed on both the top and bottom edges, a centred hole-punch cutout for a selfie camera, and a USB Type-C port at the bottom. One of the teasers also hints at a scratch-resistant screen, while another teases a feature that is said to help with accurate portrayal of skin tones, something the Edge 50 Pro is confirmed to offer. The last clip shows the handset being dunked in water, which suggests an IP rating, possibly something as high as an IP68.

An earlier leak suggested that the Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is expected to launch in at least three colour options - Beige, Black, and Peach Fuzz. It is also tipped to launch in China with the moniker Moto X50 Ultra. It is expected to launch alongside the Motorola Edge 50 Pro and Motorola Edge 50 Fusion on April 3.

The Motorola Edge 50 Ultra is expected to sport a curved OLED display with a centred hole-punch slot to hold the front camera. It will also likely feature a triple rear camera unit that is tipped to include 50-megapixel sensors, a 75mm periscope lens with 5x optical zoom, and support for laser autofocus. The handset is expected to ship with Android 14-based Hello UI and receive three years of OS upgrades. It has said to cost around $999 (roughly Rs. 83,300).
