Study Finds Coronal Loop Flickers Could Predict Solar Flares Hours in Advance

For years, scientists have sought methods to predict solar flares, the intense energy bursts from the Sun capable of disrupting technology and posing risks to astronauts. Using NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, researchers have identified brightness fluctuations in coronal loops—arch-like plasma structures in the solar atmosphere—that may provide advance warning of strong solar flares. These findings could enhance safety measures for space missions and safeguard technology affected by space weather disturbances.

Findings on Coronal Loops and Solar Flares

According to a study published in Astrophysical Journal Letters and presented at the American Astronomical Society meeting, the research led by Emily Mason of Predictive Sciences Inc. analysed coronal loops in areas preceding 50 major solar flares. Significant brightness variations in extreme ultraviolet light were observed in loops above active regions compared to those in non-flaring zones. This flickering reportedly intensifies hours before a flare occurs, suggesting a potential predictive metric. In her statement to the press, Mason noted the discovery's importance in understanding solar flare mechanisms and improving forecasting accuracy. These variations could predict flares 2 to 6 hours in advance, with an accuracy of 60 to 80 percent.

Potential Applications and Challenges

As per an official release from NASA, Seth Garland from the Air Force Institute of Technology highlighted that while previous methods focused on generalised likelihoods, the current approach might offer more specific timing predictions. Kara Kniezewski, a lead author and graduate researcher, added that chaotic patterns in loop emissions, rather than trends, provided consistent predictive results. Vadim Uritsky from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center explained that integrating this method into real-time systems could facilitate early alerts for space missions and terrestrial systems, although further observations are needed to refine the correlation between loop flickering and flare intensity.

This breakthrough may pave the way for predictive systems capable of mitigating the risks posed by solar activity, offering better protection for critical technologies and human endeavours in space.

BGMI Introduces Mahindra BE 6-Themed Content; Lets Gamers Compete to Win the eSUV

Battleground Mobile India (popularly known as BGMI) on Thursday introduced the first electric vehicle (EV) to feature in the game — the Mahindra BE 6. Test drives of the recently unveiled eSUV from Mahindra began in six cities earlier this week, and gamers can also take it for a spin while playing the popular battle royale game. The game also includes Mahindra BE 6-themed content, including events and a month-long contest that allows users to participate in a lucky draw to win the real eSUV.

Krafton Partners With Mahindra to Introduce First EV in BGMI

While BGMI already allows players to drive cars (from Aston Martin, Lamborghini, and Volkswagen) to move across the map, these are internal combustion engines (ICE) vehicles that require fuel supplies. The new Mahindra BE 6 is the first EV to debut in the game — it's also the first vehicle from an Indian carmaker to land in BGMI.

In a press briefing, the companies announced that the in-game vehicle is based on the same 3D models used for the real Mahindra BE 6. The vehicle's interiors will also be accurately represented, according to Krafton. Like other vehicles that were previously introduced in BGMI, gamers will be able to use the Mahindra BE 6 for quick travel.

With the latest update, Krafton has added a new in-game event called Mahindra BE 6 Exchange Centre, where gamers can exchange tokens to get in-game rewards, such as a Protective Vanguard Suit, a Mahindra Event Crate, and Mahindra Space Gifts. In order to redeem these "Nitro Wheels", players will need to complete various missions on BGMI.

In addition to driving the Mahindra BE 6 in the game, players will also be able to participate in a lucky draw to win the real eSUV. This month-long contest will kick off on January 25, a day after the carkmaker will commence test drives of the vehicle in 16 more cities across India. and ends on February 25.

In order to participate in the lucky draw, players will need to redeem Nitro Wheels tokens for Mahindra Event Crates, after they complete in-game missions. They must also record a video showing the Mahindra BE 6 in the game. The video must be between 10 and 30 seconds long, and be uploaded to either YouTube or Instagram — the caption must include both companies' social media handles, as well as the hashtags #BGMIxMahindra and #UnleashTheCharge.

Gamers can also use the gacha-based 'Lucky Spin' feature that might grant them in-game items such as the Quantum Flux Suit, Chrono Charge Suit, Volt Tracer Gun, Neon Drop BE 6 Parachute, Flashvault BE 6 Bag, and SparkStrike Pan, according to Krafton.

iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Tipped to Get Smaller Batteries than Standard Models

Apple and Samsung are said to be readying ‘slim' versions of their upcoming flagship phones. A tipster now suggests that the purported devices, dubbed the iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim, may ship with much smaller battery capacities than their flagship equivalents. This move is speculated to be in order to maintain the thin form factor of the handsets. Notably, the iPhone 17 Air is expected to debut in September alongside other models in the iPhone 17 series, and while the Galaxy S25 series is scheduled to launch next week, the arrival of the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim may have been delayed till May.

iPhone 17 Air, Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim Battery Capacities

In a post on the Chinese social media platform Weibo, Digital Chat Station (translated from Chinese) shared details about the expected battery capacities of the Apple and Samsung phones. As per the tipster, both models will be equipped with batteries in the 3,000-4,000mAh range. The phones are tipped to put their heat dissipation capabilities and battery life to the test with their “ultra-thin” design which could measure between 5.xmm-6.xmm.

Meanwhile, Chinese smartphone makers are expected to launch ‘slim' models of their own and they might have batteries with capacity around 5,000mAh. Recent models launched by OEMs in China have adopted Silicon-Carbon technology that allows them to have better energy density.

However, global giants such as Apple and Samsung are yet to do so, and thus may have smaller battery capacities with reduced screen on-time compared to their standard counterparts.

iPhone 17 Air and Samsung Galaxy S25 Leaks

As per a previous report, Apple's 'ultra-thin iPhone' may measure around 5.5mm in thickness, potentially making it the thinnest iPhone ever built. It is said to lack a physical SIM card slot and only supports eSIM due to its thin form factor. The phone is rumoured to come with a 6.6-inch OLED display with 120Hz ProMotion technology and Apple's Dynamic Island. For optics, it may sport a single 48-megapixel rear camera and a 24-megapixel selfie camera.

On the other hand, the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim (model no. SM-S937x/DS) could have a 6.66-inch display, which should be similar to the Galaxy S25+ model. It is said to feature a 200-megapixel primary camera, a 50-megapixel ultra-wide angle lens, and a 50-megapixel 3.5X telephoto camera.
